About

The mission of the Academy for Health Careers is to ensure that every student develops a strong foundation in health studies, science, leadership and other competencies that are essential for careers in the healthcare industry. An Academy for Health Careers graduate is college and career ready and prepared to lead the change to ensure equity in access to progressive and innovative health care. Our students graduate having researched areas of disproportionality in heath care policy with a plan to eradicate failures in public health and transform access for communities that are historically underserved.

At Academy for Health Careers, students use the arts to demonstrate their understanding of important and challenging concepts, to express their vision for equity in access to progressive health care in their communities, and to express their humanity in a world that does not always see them as fragile and deserving of care and support. This year we worked to ensure that our dance program hosted its first residency. Thirty-five students worked with teaching artists from BAM to study and express their inquiry and understanding of Cameroon -- its culture and dance. We also extended the dance program to include a drum ensemble with 5 drums used in the residency. We will be offering Dance and Drum ensemble classes so that students themselves can provide the accompaniment for the African Dance classes. As well, we partnered with Ronald Draper Art to build voice for our 60 students that identify as males. They met with the teaching artist as Kreative Kings to share ideas on how they care about their role in our school and expressed those aspirations in a mural on the second floor. The mural is a reflection of the Joy students feel and the community they are working to build as they study and develop skills they will use to transform the landscape of innovate and progressive health care in Brooklyn.
