About the School
Founded in 2003, the High School for Public Service is known for our consistently high graduation rates and joyful school community. Our focus on academic excellence coupled with our mission to serve the community prepares HSPS scholars to positively impact the lives of others. Students select from one of three academies: Medical, Legal, and Urban Farming. Coursework is tailored to students’ career interests beginning in the 10th grade with electives such as Constitutional Law, Advanced Medical Science, Environmental Science, and many more. Despite being a smaller school, we remain dedicated to offering rich experiences in art, music, drama, and an array of highly challenging electives. A wide variety of Advanced Placement and College Now courses afford students with the opportunity to earn over 20 college credits in high school. Free SAT prep is offered on Saturdays and teachers are available after school for additional support. With fewer than 500 students, we remain committed to knowing each student well. Each HSPS student joins an advisory group which meets multiple times per week beginning in 9th grade and continuing until graduation. This advisory program promotes deep connections between students and staff. All advisory groups work collaboratively to select focus areas and locations to serve their community as a force for positive change. Through annual service projects, community partnerships, and individual work, every student aims to complete at least 50 hours of community service per year. Our vibrant school community includes over 25 clubs, an array of varsity sports, and frequent field trips including international travel. School spirit events such as field days, pep rallies, student and parent social events, and career connections are staples of the student experience. HSPS partners with several community-based organizations that support the growth of our students, such as Global Kids, Inc. MCC Theater Company, Kings Against Violence Initiative, CAMBA, Generation Citizen, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, AP for All, College Access for All, New Visions for Public Schools, Arthur Ashe, Lazard, SAVE THE MUSIC, Carnegie Hall Music Program, Relationship Abuse Prevention Program, The Campaign Against Hunger as well as other corporate partners offering career and workplace experiences. HSPS also maintains a fully functional community pantry open to all community members.
