About

The Urban Assembly School for Applied Math and Science strives to develop and prepare all of our students to become compassionate, critical thinkers capable of successful pursuits after high school. We expect that all of our students will be prepared for college-level study and will be equipped with the skills to make solid career choices. We operate on the premise that as critical thinkers attempt to make sense of the world around them, they tend naturally to engage deeply with mathematics, and that applied mathematics can be a powerful unifying force in the school experience. As a result, the mathematical sciences are celebrated at this school. Students attending our school are eligible to apply to the Bronx STEAM Center. Students accepted to Bronx STEAM will spend a portion of their school day and at least two years engaging in high quality Career and Technical Education classes at the Bronx STEAM Center in one of six career pathways aligned to critical sectors such as healthcare and technology. With support across our school and the Bronx STEAM Center, students will earn early college credit, industry credentials, participate in paid work experiences and receive personalized advising to graduate onto higher education and/or employment in family sustaining careers.

Art
Our arts program is an integral part of our students' academic program. During the school day, all students enroll in arts-based electives, including instrumental music, visual arts, dance, performing arts, computer design, crafts, and woodworking. All of our freshmen take a Fundamentals of Art course and attend two art-based field trips in their first year of high school. Students who excel in the Fundamentals Art course are encouraged to enroll in Studio Art 1 during tenth grade. Three fourths of our sophomores take a Beginner's Photography class while a quarter of the cohort moved on to an Advanced Photography course. Upperclassmen have access to more advanced courses such as Pottery and Advanced Painting. There are a series of afterschool arts-based programs open to all students, including dance, visual arts, 3-D printing, and music. During the summer, we run Camp AMS, an all-day program combining academics and arts. This camp is open to all middle school students, including those mandated for summer school. Throughout the year, all of our arts programs include performances and displays. Students invite the community to share and celebrate their acquired artistic skills.
