About

At Pelham Lab High School, we value equity, communication, collaboration and character. We encourage students to ask the right questions so they can begin thinking critically about the world around them. Asking the right questions is equally as important as knowing the right answers. We believe that by encouraging you to ask deep questions, by engaging you in creative experiences outside of the classroom, and by ensuring that your social, academic, and emotional needs are met, you will set and achieve challenging but worthwhile goals in your future life.

Art
Pelham Lab School believes that a rigorous, challenging curriculum in the arts is essential and that it informs the study and practice of all other content areas while also providing a platform for students to see the innate unity of all knowledge. Pelham Lab offers Visual Arts and Dance as specific Arts-focused courses. Teachers in the content areas make conscious efforts to use the power of the visual and performing arts to teach and illuminate their content areas while making connections to the larger universe and the human condition. For example, a Living Environment teacher might use a discussion of symmetry in depictions of birds as a point of entry into the discussion of evolution. A Spanish teacher might open a discussion on color by introducing a painting by Velasquez. Instruction in the arts will also be provided through partnerships with local community-based and arts-focused organizations. Students will take regular field trips to performances, museums and parks for appreciation and practice of the arts. Although Pelham Lab is an interdisciplinary school with a focus on rigorous questioning and application of the Scientific Method, we do not feel this excludes the arts from our mission; it expands opportunities for arts-based education and deepens students' experiences by encouraging them to observe, critically analyze and interpret the world. Pelham Lab High School offers an interdisciplinary program in the arts with an emphasis on dance and visual arts.
