Art
At the High School for Health Careers and Sciences, we offer a rigorous arts program. Currently, we offer courses in both the visual and theater arts. In the visual arts, we offer studio arts and graphic design as well as Advanced Placement (AP) Studio Art 2-D. In studio arts, students are given a foundation in the elements of art and principles of design. Students view, discuss and create paintings, drawings and mixed-media artworks. Additionally, the students are exposed to art history of various cultures. In graphic design, students are exposed to entire Adobe Cloud including PSCC and Illustrator, as well as iMovie. In AP Studio Art 2-D, the students develop their own portfolios in any medium they choose. In the theater arts course students are exposed to introductory acting skills, improvisation, basic design, directing exercises and theater history. Students will have choices of how to showcase the theatrical concepts learned. Our students are given the opportunity to explore the arts in museums and film, view Broadway and Off-Broadway shows and visit colleges with arts programs. We are currently working with community partners to find more programs to engage the students, including the development of more performance opportunities.
