About

Lyons Community School is a 6-12 public school in Brooklyn united in its commitment to unconventional learning, unconditional support, and unlimited potential. Lyons provides personalized learning opportunities engaging students in grades 6-12 for discovery, growth, and success into adulthood. We offer a small, inclusive environment where students are known, supported, and challenged to grow into thoughtful, curious, and compassionate individuals. Our personalized approach includes hands-on learning through internships, weekly field studies, arts, and social justice projects. As a member of the NYS Performance Standards Consortium, students complete Performance-Based Assessment Tasks (PBATs) in-depth essays, experiments, and presentations instead of most Regents exams (only the ELA Regents is required). Academic offerings include electives like public speaking, forensics, zoology, computer science, cooking, and photography, as well as advanced courses in Literature, History, Mathematics and Science. Lyons is a model Restorative Justice school, using peer mediation and justice panels to build community. Through the Career Readiness & Modern Youth Apprenticeship (CRMYA) and Future Ready NYC programs, students access paid internships in tech, finance, social services, and business. Extracurriculars include clubs like GSA, Anime, Theater, Outdoor Leadership, and Social Justice, plus sports such as basketball, soccer, volleyball, cheerleading, and dance. Student leadership opportunities include Student Council, Peer Mentorship, and the Sustainability Team.
