About

Modeled after the prestigious Boston Latin school and founded in 2006, The Brooklyn Latin School provides a liberal arts curriculum with an emphasis on the Classics and Latin language instruction. Early instruction emphasizes the acquisition of core knowledge of the key academic disciplines which students use as a foundation for deeper exploration in the upper grades. Widely regarded around the world as the most rigorous and comprehensive course of study at the high school level, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme is integral to our curriculum. In all classes, students experience a strong and consistent emphasis on analytical thinking, structured writing, and public speaking, preparing them for the challenges of college work.

Art
All Brooklyn Latin students complete at least two visual arts courses: Foundations in Art, an introductory studio-based course in 2D media and techniques, and; Art and Society, a studio-integrated art history course covering visual arts movements from ancient to modern societies and examining questions around the purpose of art, the relationship between visual imagery and societal values and influence vs. appropriation. These courses meet twice a week during students' freshman and sophomore years and provide a foundation in principles of art making and analysis. In 11th and 12th grade, students may choose to enroll in International Baccalaureate (IB) Visual Arts or IB Theater, which are two-year portfolio-bases courses asking to an introductory visual arts or theater arts studio course in a collegiate arts program. In IB Visual Arts, students investigate and analyze works of visual arts journals as they explore and develop ideas. In IB Theater, students explore theater history, theory and practice through the lens of a scholar, an historian, an audience member, and an actor. After school, students engage in studio art, theater, music and dance enrichments programs at Brooklyn Latin. There were two visual arts showcases and one drama club performance in the 23-24' school year.
