High School for Teaching and the Professions is a FutureReadyNYC school committed to educating 21st Century Educators and Leaders in our Teaching Pathways. We prepare students with 21st century employability skills, not just teaching skills. We aim to empower student voice and choice and engage students with authentic, real-world problem-solving opportunities, placing students at the center of their learning. These opportunities and learning experiences contribute to our students becoming empathic global citizens in our ever evolving world. Our school is also a proud AVID school. AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a schoolwide transformation effort focused on leadership, systems, instruction, and culture, and is designed to increase the number of students who enroll and succeed in higher education. In the AVID Elective class, students receive daily instruction and support from a trained AVID Elective teacher. We offer our students the opportunity to gain college credits and an advanced regents diploma. Our teachers guide students through inquiry-based learning connected to concerns and challenges students witness or experience in their lives or the broader community. Students learn and engage with rigorous curriculum through AVID academic strategies like writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organizational skills, and critical reading (WICOR). Students can also participate in field experiences in the form of internships, mentorships, and apprenticeships as well as join and propose clubs centered around the theme 21st Century Educators and Leaders. These courses, projects, club, and field experience opportunities will be available during the school day, afterschool, and over the summer. Our community school model provides students and families with a hub for academic and emotional support for the whole child.
