About

Urban Action Academy uses themes of social justice to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and self-confidence needed to pursue college and professional careers in public service. Based on social issues they're passionate about, UAA students become public ambassadors and engage in local and broader community social action and change engagements. Woven into the fabric of our Regents-track academic program, students are continuously being prepared for the rigors of college, careers, and adult life. Students receive personalized support by teachers, counselors, school leaders, and CBO partners, and are provided with the requisite academics and various prep programs. Our academic program builds and strengthens our students' self-confidence by instilling a sense of civic-minded urgency in each student.

Art
During the 2023-2024 School Year, Urban Action Academy was able to hire a full time licensed art teacher to begin the stages of building a rigorous art program through sculpture and studio art. We were able to extend these art classes to evening classes for our students and their families once a month. In both sections of these classes, students and families learn and practice fundamental principles and techniques of studio art and sculpture. Students have artistic creativity to express themselves through various medium. Literacy has been incorporated into our art program, where students are learning essential vocabulary germane to various works of art. This is aligned to the school's SCEP instructional priority areas. Students also develop their artist visual statements throughout the term. The curriculum includes drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, etc. Students also learn about various artists that are culturally relevant. The dance grant was aligned to our Spanish Class where students learned the art of storytelling and dance for through Flamenco dance. We used project pivot funds to provide African dance, drumming and singing through a Ghanaian organization, ASASE YAA. Students learned teamwork, dance forms and cultural aspects of drumming in various communities around the world and their modern connections to music, language and way of life.
