About

City College Magnet School of the Arts (CCMSA) is a 6-12 early college public school located in the Inwood neighborhood of northern Manhattan. In partnership with the City University of New York's (CUNY) Early College Initiative (ECI) and the City College of New York (CCNY), CCMSA provides students with an accelerated pathway to college and career readiness. Beginning as early as their freshman year, students can take free college courses at the CCNY campus, earning college credits while meeting high school graduation requirements and jumpstarting their higher education at no cost. Guided by an arts-infused, project-based curriculum, CCMSA emphasizes cognitive and skill-based learning through principles like design, problem-solving, and critique. Students can explore a variety of electives, from visual and performing arts to STEM and financial literacy, ensuring a well-rounded education. Our graduates leave as college-ready, creative, and critical thinkers, prepared to excel in their future education and careers and poised to make meaningful contributions to their communities.

Art
Our arts program primarily consists of courses taught by our three full-time teachers, and college level courses are offered to high school students. We have benefitted greatly from four donated pianos, three from Sing for Hope, that the students play constantly. In addition to course offerings, students may choose to participate in afterschool visual arts, piano instruction and garden: landscape design club. Courses offered in-school include sixth, eighth grade, and high school students take visual arts, seventh and high school students receive strings instruction, high school music appreciation and piano instruction, high school stage design, illustration and paper arts, foundations of art and design, and ecological illustration. The early college program offers the following classes to high school students starting in ninth grade: Introduction to Drawing, Introduction to Painting, Intermediate Drawing, Photography, Keyboard Instruction, Freshman Inquiry Writing Seminar (FIQWS) Puppetry, FIQWS Earthworks and Landscape Architecture, and FIQWS Musical Theater. Additionally, we partner with Carnegie Hall, the Juilliard School and The Theater Development Fund which provide instruction and enrichment activities for our students. Our goal for the arts program is to offer our students a comprehensive arts program that will spark their interest and hone their skills.
