Young Writers is a small supportive community where excellent teaching, close relationships, and high expectations lead students to college and successful careers. We use a restorative approach to support student development, strengthen relationships and as an alternative to traditional discipline. Classes are student-centered and focus on developing reading, writing, discussion, and presentation skills. Ninth graders will end the year as a contributing author to a published book through 826NYC Publishing Company. Our students have the opportunity to be a part of the Career Readiness and Modern Youth Apprenticeship (CRMYA) program, where they can apply for apprenticeships in tech, finance, and business, which allows them to earn up to $40,000 by the time they graduate. They also can earn up to 18 college credits through our partnership with College Now at New York City College of Technology as well as 6 additional college credits through our partnership with Ed Equity Lab. We are part of the Career Readiness and Modern Youth Apprenticeship (CRMYA) pilot, which helps us support career readiness for all our students. We have courses that help our ninth and tenth graders explore their career interests and develop readiness skills.
