About

BASE is a CTE high school focusing on computer science and social justice. Computer Science courses such as Python, Robotics and Mobile App Design use the tools of software engineering to focus on real-world problem solving, and internships and other opportunities with industry partners give students experience with cutting-edge technology. Our literacy program supports all students where they are, and the senior capstone projects call on students to demonstrate mastery across the disciplines before they graduate. BASE partners include iMentor, which gives all 11th and 12th graders mentors to support the college/postsecondary application process, and BuildOn, so students regularly do community service work (100 hours are required), with the chance to go on international service trips. BASE graduates are prepared to develop their skills in college, enter the software industry as programmers or website designers, and understand and support the communities they live in.

Art

The main art discipline offered at X264, the Bronx Academy for Software Engineering, is visual arts. Almost all tenth graders take visual arts during their sophomore year. Juniors and seniors have the option to take a portfolio development class. We have several focuses: 1) The majority of ideas and subjects of student artwork are self generated. We want students to feel their ideas are important, thus they choose what to represent. Idea generation and realization is important. 2) Students are exposed to a wide range of techniques and materials. 3) In addition to learning about European and North American artists, students discuss art forms and art of African, Bengali, Dominican, Puerto Rican, Mexican, and Yemenite artists, with which they have additional cultural connections. Graffiti art, an important art form largely developed in the Bronx, is examined in detail. 4) We teach artistic behaviors: Persistence, remixing, understanding the principles of design, experimenting with materials, making aesthetic choices, using art-specific terminology. 5) We strive to create an artistic community where everybody feels welcomed, appreciated, and valued for their creative work and for their contribution to our community of artists and the entire school.

All BASE students take four years of computer science, learning programming languages like HTML5, Javascript, and Java. Students use Design Thinking, a human-centered problem-solving approach to solve real-world problems. Seniors do a capstone project where they use skills from across disciplines to address a problem in their community. BASE students participate in citywide hackathons sponsored by groups like Code/Interactive and Forbes, and have had internships at SCENYC, Alvin Ailey, and Gilt.
