Gotham Tech, designed in partnership with STEM education organization NYC FIRST, showcases robotics as a vehicle for inspiring and empowering students to succeed by developing their mindsets and skillsets. Robotics takes what is in the mind and makes it tangible, real and joyful, while integrating a range of STEM disciplines that form the core of the new high-tech economy. Gotham Tech will teach robotics as a challenge-based learning framework, and it will apply that framework to a range of subjects, with a focus on defining problems, researching them, conceiving solutions, testing those solutions, and taking action. Students will start in 9th grade working towards capstone projects, assisted and guided by teachers and other students, that will help them prepare for college and career. Ultimately, students will gain the capacity to help build a better and more equitable society.

Academic Highlights: Mentorship: Gotham Tech students will mentor and be mentored. In 360-degree mentorship, adults mentor high school students, high school students mentor younger students, and high school students even mentor adults., Robotics & STEM: Every student participates in robotics – the “sport for the mind” – building one’s mindset and skillset. Robotics integrates a range of critical STEM disciplines, including artificial intelligence, computer science, mechanical engineering, electronics and fabrication; woven together, these form the fabric of much of the economy that has emerged today and will likely dominate in the decades to come., Connections to a Broader Community. There are hundreds of robotics teams around New York City, housed at schools, libraries, CBOs and more. Gotham Tech will be at the core of this community, with links and pathways to other institutions, including higher education (e.g., Cornell Tech) and tech-forward businesses across New York City., Capstone: Students in all grades will participate in a collaborative capstone project, modeled on a college thesis, working with other students, and helping them to build connections that will help them understand the next chapter of their lives., Challenge-Based Curricula: Gotham Tech goes beyond robotics, applying how robotics is taught – as a challenge-based learning framework focused on defining problems, researching them, conceiving solutions, testing those solutions, and taking action – to other curricular areas
